To Breed Or Not To Breed

Updated: Aug 30, 2025

Pros and Cons of Adopting a Pet or buying from a Breeder

Pros

  • None that I can think of ... but on a serious note, of course if you do end up going to a breeder, make sure they are licensed and you visit their home or where they are breeding the dogs directly. A proper breeder will make sure that the dogs go to good homes and will ensure that the mothers are in good condition and are taken to the vet if needed. Without ethical breeders could it mean the end of certain breeds?

Cons

  • Cost: Purchasing a pet from a breeder can be significantly more expensive than adopting from a shelter.

  • Ethical Concerns: Some breeders may prioritise profit over animal welfare, leading to unethical breeding practices.

  • Limited Selection: Breeders usually focus on specific breeds, which may limit options for those looking for mixed breeds or less common animals.

  • Overpopulation Issues: Supporting breeders can contribute to the pet overpopulation problem, as many animals in shelters are in need of homes.

  • Waiting Lists: Popular breeds may have long waiting lists, which can delay the process of bringing a new pet home. Why wait when you can foster or adopt straight away by Visiting our PET ADOPTION section!
